If you are traveling to the Caribbean after a hurricane has been there, check with the tourist board or individual hotels before planning your visit. The island may have sustained damage, and your accommodations may not be what you expected. Many hotels/motels in Germany, France and Switzerland (even the more expensive ones) do not have tee and coffee making facilities in the rooms. You have to either buy your cuppa from the hotel bar - or a nearby shop. This can be expensive (especially tea in France). Take a portable water boiler (under $30). This will save you money and hassles looking for open cafes in the middle of the night! Want a Cheap Cruise? One way to obtain a cheap cruise is to go on a repositioning cruise. A repositioning cruise is where the cruise line sends the ships from one location at the end of the cruising season, to another part of the world for the start of another cruising season, such as ships that leave the Caribbean and sail to Alaska for the start of the Alaska cruise season in May, then sail back to the Caribbean in September. A repositioning cruise is a great way to get a one-way sailing opportunity at a discount, because the cruise lines don't want to send the ship back empty. These sailings are usually two or three weeks, and take place in April, May, September, October, and November. The upside is a longer cruise at a cheaper price. The downside is that the cruise is only one-way, so you have to purchase one-way tickets to the point.
When traveling to Hawaii in the winter time and coming from the midwest or the eastern United States, try not to connect through Denver or Seattle, because of bad weather, snow storms, and de-icing and such. Several of our current guests have had problems with Seattle, and sitting for hours on the plane waiting for de-icing, and then missing their connection in Honolulu for outer island, which causes them to get stuck in Honolulu overnight. Best to connect through Los Angeles or San Francisco (although San Francisco does have fog problems, too). Remember that travelling to high altitudes for ski vacations may take some adjustment. Upon arrival, drink plenty of liquids, restrict vigorous activity for the first day, and avoid alcohol and caffeine for the first twenty-four hours. Altitude illness can spoil a vacation, causing nausea, headache, and difficulty breathing. If you have had problems before in travelling to high altitude, consult your doctor about a prescription for Diamox, which should be taken a few days before arrival and continued several days into your trip. Happy skiing! There are some bed and breakfasts that accept babies and very young children. Most don't. Usually the cut off age is 7+. A bed and breakfast is normally not child proofed (unless a special.
Your innkeeper will also be happy to inform you of all there is to do in their area and supply you with maps and brochures, or make dinner and tour reservations. You receive much more personal attention at a bed and breakfast than you would in a hotel or motel. Your innkeeper will be happy to give you a history of their home and the area, the best places to go, the best places to eat, and the places to avoid. They make sure you will get the most out of the time you have away. When boarding the aircraft, make a mental note of all exits, and count how many seat rows you pass from the exit to your row. This will expedite your escape route in case of an emergency landing if there is smoke and/or power loss in the cabin. And by all means, pay attention to the flight crew! No matter how boring or uninteresting it may sound, their instructions.
