If you are traveling to the Caribbean after a hurricane has been there, check with the tourist board or individual hotels before planning your visit. The island may have sustained damage, and your accommodations may not be what you expected. Breakfast is always special. Not only are you enjoying the culinary talents of your host, but you get to meet and greet the other guests. Sometimes you'll meet people from the other side of the globe or run into an old high school chum you haven't seen in 25 years! Usually the menu is the same for all. Some places can accommodate special dietary requests, but I would advise asking when making your reservation. Cruises for the Disabled? There's no reason not to cruise with a disability on today's ships. There are even 1-2 tall sailing ships that are built or retrofitted specifically for those with disabilities (you can be part of the crew). Cruise ships can accommodate wheelchair users, diabetics, dialysis patients, oxygen users, the visually and hearing impaired, those with smoking allergies, and even those traveling with assistance dogs. In Australia, the least expensive way to see the country and stay overnight is by renting a car and staying at coach camps (these are private campgrounds around the country). These campgrounds have coaches or camp-trailers.
When traveling to Hawaii in the winter time and coming from the midwest or the eastern United States, try not to connect through Denver or Seattle, because of bad weather, snow storms, and de-icing and such. Several of our current guests have had problems with Seattle, and sitting for hours on the plane waiting for de-icing, and then missing their connection in Honolulu for outer island, which causes them to get stuck in Honolulu overnight. Best to connect through Los Angeles or San Francisco (although San Francisco does have fog problems, too). If you are visiting a city which has a good waterway system, it is a good idea to explore the city on a local ferry. You slowly imbibe the city's culture, observe local people, and watch the panaroma gradually unfold - all this without making a big hole in your pocket. When in Canada you will be dealing with taxes added to the base price of many items ranging from accommodations to postage stamps. Taxes include the Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 7%, which applies throughout Canada. The Provincial Sales Tax (PST) varies from province to province. These additions are not always marked on price tags (or offered in pricing quotes) and might only be added.
Furthermore, the air is very very dry. This can lead to dehydration, which can also make you feel lousy. I strongly advise bringing a litre or two of water with you, and guzzling that non-stop throughout the trip. Almost all bed and breakfasts offer complimentary refreshments and a fridge in a common area to keep things cold, but don't allow eating in the rooms. So if you're not sure what is permitted, please ask. When boarding the aircraft, make a mental note of all exits, and count how many seat rows you pass from the exit to your row. This will expedite your escape route in case of an emergency landing if there is smoke and/or power loss in the cabin. And by all means, pay attention to the flight crew! No matter how boring or uninteresting it may sound, their instructions are vital ... and read the aircraft emergency procedure manual completely before takeoff.
