When in Canada you will be dealing with taxes added to the base price of many items ranging from accommodations to postage stamps. Taxes include the Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 7%, which applies throughout Canada. The Provincial Sales Tax (PST) varies from province to province. These additions are not always marked on price tags (or offered in pricing quotes) and might only be added at the cash register. So always ask. That 'bargain' might not be so great after all. While staying at a bed and breakfast, it's a great idea to communicate during your stay your breakfast preferences, (i.e., starches, carbs, fruit preferences, citrus etc). Some inns are small enough to accommodate your requests, and by having what you wish, it makes for a much more enjoyable stay. Prior to your departure, let them know what you 'vote' your favorite breakfast. Some of our menus are named after guests that either ate a 'record number' or raved on and on ... (i.e. Chauncey's Sour Cream Belgian Waffles with fresh Blackberries ... he ate nine) We enjoy giving out recipes named after guests to other guests! And ... it's always a great story at the breakfast table. How to Read Cruise Brochures? Brochure styles vary from different cruise lines. Open any cruise brochure and you are sure to find an overwhelming display of information and photographs. What you need are just the facts in simple-to-understand terms. Some cruise lines feature their entire fleet with the itineraries in one brochure. Others have brochures for each destination - such.
Automobile/Airline Adapters: There have been a few instances of airline power adapters not working with in-seat power sources. This can happen when an adapter is required to produce the fully rated 70 watts to fast charge the internal laptop battery but the in-seat power system is not designed to produce that much power. With an adapter efficiency of 90%, the 70-watt load tries to pull 78 watts from the in-seat power unit, and it safely shuts down. The safety circuits in the adapter also sense the overload and also safely shut down. Furthermore, the air is very very dry. This can lead to dehydration, which can also make you feel lousy. I strongly advise bringing a litre or two of water with you, and guzzling that non-stop throughout the trip. When traveling to Hawaii in the winter time and coming from the midwest or the eastern United States, try not to connect through Denver or Seattle, because of bad weather, snow storms, and de-icing and such. Several of our current guests have had problems with Seattle, and sitting for hours on the plane waiting for de-icing, and then missing their connection in Honolulu for outer island, which causes them to get stuck in Honolulu overnight. Best to connect through Los Angeles or San Francisco (although San Francisco does have fog problems, too). Breakfast is always special. Not only are you enjoying the culinary talents of your host, but you get to meet and greet the other guests. Sometimes you'll meet people from the other side of the globe or run into an old high school chum you haven't seen in 25 years! Usually the menu is the same for all. Some places can accommodate special dietary requests, but I would advise asking when.
